Li Fan won the Architecture & Design category for his series Cement Factory, in the Professional competition category, Sony World Photography Awards 2023.

Li Fan says, "In the process of human social development, human behavior and lifestyle often invaded nature and failed to live in harmony with nature. Wen Tianxiang, a Chinese politician and literary scholar of the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279), wrote in a poem: "The city is not what it used to be, but the mountains and rivers are as they used to be." Cityscapes may have changed from the past, but the natural environment should be timeless and remains unchanged over time. The ancient Chinese have recognized this, and today's Chinese value and cherish the natural environment. From the remains of these industrial buildings I photographed, I can see the Chinese people behind them and the changes in their lives in the past decades. In my opinion, these seemingly silent and expressionless architectural remains quietly tell the changed concepts of Chinese people regarding the relationship between urban development and environmental protection, as well as the choices and efforts made by Chinese people for harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature. For many years, I have been focusing on people, engaging in humanistic documentary photography, and my work of the Yi ethnic group won the first prize in the Life Category of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards. In recent years, I began to use social landscape to reflect China's economic development and social changes. It is an honor that my work of cement factory has been recognized by the judges."
